Pacing Partner

the metronome

The chapter has been holding its breath for six pages. Either the breath has to end, or the reader will.

The brief

What it reads for.

The momentum reader. Reads each chapter for tension and release, the shape of attention, and the modulation that turns words on a page into a felt experience. Flags scenes that overstay, hooks that don't pull, exits that don't propel, and quiet stretches that haven't earned their silence.

Best when you're worried a chapter is dragging, when you can't tell if your big moment is landing, or when you need a check on the larger rhythm of the book. Pair with Developmental for full structural work.

You can add your own instructions on top if you'd like to focus the read (e.g. "this is supposed to be the slow chapter - is the slowness earned?" or "I think my action scenes are too long").

How it sounds

The voice.

Attentive, slightly impatient with slack but appreciative of earned stillness. Hears the pulse of tension and release at scene and chapter level.
